About the Artist

The summer I was 16, my mother somehow scraped together enough money to give me private art lessons from a professional portrait painter, Wm. Buchholz. The lessons I learned from him formed the foundation of everything I know about art – line, form, shading, color, and drama. Since then I have been principally self-taught, in part because I was not sure what I wanted to be when I grew up…and to a certain extent because I learn best that way.

The discipline required to pursue the independent study of art holds both good and bad qualities. The benefit is that, as an artist, it lets you move at your own pace and concentrate on what is most meaningful to you personally. However, the negative side is that it opens you up to a fair amount of uncertainty and self doubt. I remember, early in my studies, how often I would feel really good about something I painted only to open an art magazine, look at the work of others, and feel so intimidated. I would often wonder “What on earth makes me think I could ever be good at this?”

And then finally, through prayer, I came to understand that God has given each one of us an individual gift, like notes in a song, and that each note is important. We all have special gifts, and there is no one greater than another. So I would encourage you, too, to look at the special gift that God has given you and do your best with it. All of us, blended together, is what makes the world a more beautiful place.

Thank you for your interest in my work. As I have just said…this is my little note in the song of art. I hope it is a blessing to you.
